Diagnostic Peripheral Nerve Blocks

Peripheral nerves are the nerves outside your brain and spinal cord. When they become damaged/injured they can cause pain along the area of the body that the nerve innervates.

Peripheral nerve blocks are injections performed performed under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. A needle is inserted to lie next to the specific nerve thought to be causing the pain. Local anesthetic is then injected which numbs the nerve and provides information as to whether or not the individual nerve is the cause of pain.
