Bursa Injections

Greater Trochanteric Bursa Injections

  • Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the bursa (fluid filled sac that cushions an area of friction between tissues) at the part of the hip called the greater trochanter. When this bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, it causes pain in the hip.
  • Greater trochanteric bursa injections are performed under fluoroscopic guidance (x-ray imaging). A small needle is inserted into the bursa where both steroid and local anesthetic are injected. This works by reducing the inflammation and irritation.

Ischial Bursa injections

  • Ischial bursitis is inflammation of the bursa (fluid filled sac that cushions an area of friction between tissues) in the buttock area between the ischial tuberosity and the gluteus maximus. When this bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, it causes pain in the buttocks that is worse with sitting or following exercise.
