Sacroiliac Joint Fusion
The sacroiliac joint (SI joint) is the joint between the sacrum and the ilium. Sacroiliitis is irritation/inflammation of the SI joint. This pain causes low back/buttocks pain that can refer into the groin or back of the leg.
Conservative management is initially trialed including physical therapy and SI joint injections. In a significant number of individuals, these therapies are not effective or only provide short term relief. It is at this point that minimally invasive SI joint fusion should be considered.
Posterior SI joint fusion is a minimally invasive surgery where a bone allograft (small implanted device) is placed into the SI joint. This allograft will slightly distract (open) the joint and over time will cause the joint to fuse. It is an outpatient procedure that is performed under fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance.
